Building on their recent collaboration agreement, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) have signed a tripartite agreement with the UK based Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) to transform support for public sector accountants in the Asia-Pacific region.
Terry McLaughlin, NZICA Chief Executive, sees the outcomes of this agreement as a practical way that NZICA can further support the public sector.
“We recognise CIPFA’s expertise and track record in supporting chartered accountants working in the public sector. We’re keen to leverage this expertise and pass it on to our own members working in this professional space,” Mr McLaughlin says.
“This collaboration is very timely given the Government’s focus on reducing debt and expenditure post the global financial crisis.”
Graham Meyer, Chief Executive Officer, ICAA sees the tripartite agreement as a way to further strengthen its public sector offering.
“Today’s public sector operating environment provides some particularly unique challenges and opportunities.
“CIPFA has a long track record as well as expertise in supporting accountants working in the public sector. We are looking forward to working together, alongside NZICA, to optimise this expertise and experience for the benefit of our members.
“The collaboration will allow all institutes to enhance the services they offer to accountants working in the public services in the Asia-Pacific region”, Mr Meyer says.
The three Institutes will adapt and jointly promote development opportunities including continuing professional development courses for senior financial staff in the public sector and those providing services to the public sector. Additional public sector learning modules, already in use by CIPFA, will be tailored and developed for use by ICAA and NZICA.
Steve Freer, CIPFA’s Chief Executive, says “CIPFA’s focus is exclusively on the public services. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the ICAA and NZICA to help advance strong public financial management and governance in the Asia-Pacific region”.
In September NZICA and ICAA announced a collaboration to work together on a number of key projects. In relation to this specific initiative with CIPFA, the two institutes will do this under the name Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand (CAANZ).
This tripartite agreement with CIPFA further strengthens the CAANZ collaboration by allowing both institutes to offer more services for chartered accountants in the region.
