CIPFA's Council Tax Survey 2016: CIPFA released the results of its council tax survey in early March. The survey revealed that all councils outside of London were set to raise council tax up to 4%, while London councils enjoyed a virtual freeze.

The Budget: Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne announced the Budget, which would result in increasingly tight public sector budgets. CIPFA's chief executive, Rob Whiteman, said: "Raising employer contributions for public sector pensions is a stealth cut – meaning money is diverted from services back to the Treasury."

Increase in council powers: CIPFA commented on councils raising council tax by 2%, in order to pay for social care.
Government failing to protect whistleblowers: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) expressed concern over the government's failure to protect whistleblowers and called for reform. CIPFA's Head of Counter Fraud Centre, Rachael Tiffen, urged the government to take PAC's recommendations seriously.
