CIMA and CIPFA in discussion

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is in discussion with public service specialist the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) about offering the latter’s members a route to CIMA membership and the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation. Further details are expected to be available later in the year.

Looking ahead, the two organisations will also discuss how they can co-operate to strengthen public sector financial management.

Charles Tilley, Chief Executive at CIMA, said:

“CIPFA is one of the most respected professional bodies in the public sector in the world with members based across the globe. Its members are increasingly bringing business-focused skills and judgements to their organisations, and CIMA is delighted to be working with CIPFA to build upon an already world-renowned level of training.”

Rob Whiteman, Chief Executive at CIPFA, said:

“Across the public sector globally, CIMA is respected for its expertise and leadership in the field of management accounting. We intend to build a bridge that enables our members to access that expertise and will help strengthen their own professional practice and the financial management of the organisations they support.”

About CIMA

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), founded in 1919, is the world’s leading and largest professional body of management accountants, with over 229,000 members and students operating in 176 countries, working at the heart of business. CIMA members and students work in industry, commerce, the public sector and not-for-profit organisations. CIMA works closely with employers and sponsors leading-edge research, constantly updating its qualification, professional experience requirements and continuing professional development to ensure it remains the employers’ choice when recruiting financially-trained business leaders.

Professionalism and ethics are at the core of CIMA’s activities with every member and student bound by robust standards so that integrity, expertise and vision are brought together.

The Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) designation was established and is owned by the Swiss Verein which was created in the 2011 joint venture between CIMA and the AICPA. CIMA, along with the AICPA, is a licensee of the CGMA designation, with power to permit its qualified members to use that designation. The standards (examination and experience requirements) that underpin A/FCMA therefore also underpin the designation of CGMA. CGMA is the global quality standard that further elevates the profession of management accounting. The designation recognises the most talented and committed management accountants with the discipline and skill to drive strong business performance.

CIMA is proud to be the first professional accounting body to offer a truly global product in the fast-moving area of Islamic Finance.

The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) is one of the leading professional accountancy bodies in the UK and the only one which specialises in the public services. It is responsible for the education and training of professional accountants and for their regulation through the setting and monitoring of professional standards.

Uniquely among the professional accountancy bodies in the UK, CIPFA has responsibility for setting accounting standards for a significant part of the economy, namely local government. CIPFA’s members work (often at the most senior level) in the public service bodies, in the national audit agencies and major accountancy firms. They are respected throughout for their high technical and ethical standards and professional integrity. CIPFA also provides a range of high quality advisory, information and training and consultancy services to public service organisations. As such, CIPFA is the leading independent commentator on managing and accounting.
