Innovation, collaboration and commitment mark the inaugural Government Counter Fraud Awards

This evening’s Government Counter Fraud Awards has been an opportunity to recognise some of the very best work being done to tackle an issue which impacts all parts of the public sector.

Initiatives and organisations from across the public sector were represented, demonstrating the importance and urgency needed to fight fraud in its many forms.

The inaugural Awards ceremony was co-hosted by the Cabinet Office, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy’s (CIPFA) Counter Fraud Centre and the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The competition was incredibly close, as many organisations and individuals have worked hard to improve fraud defences dramatically over the past 12 months.

Congratulations to the winners of the Government Counter Fraud Awards:

Outstanding Recovery Solution: Operation CHEESY (a collaboration between Department of Work and Pensions, Liverpool Local Authority and HMRC).

Outstanding Collaboration: Operation Renegade and Operation Eagle (Operation Renegade is a UK-based investigation between the Fraud Investigation Service HMRC, the Revenue Commissioners – Republic of Ireland and Police Service of Northern Ireland).

Excellence in Fraud Prevention: NHS Scotland Counter Fraud Services Team

Outstanding Internal Fraud Initiative: Counter Fraud and Corruption Team at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Excellence in Fraud Awareness: National Trading Standards Scams Team

Rachael Tiffen, Head of the CIPFA Counter Fraud Centre, said:

“As scams get more sophisticated, we urgently need better defences against fraud, particularly against cyber fraud.

“The Government Counter Fraud Awards is an excellent opportunity to recognise and celebrate those organisations, teams and individuals who are working tirelessly to weed out public sector fraud in all its many forms.

“By shining a light on the issue, I hope these Awards act as a reminder to businesses and public bodies of the importance of training highly-skilled counter fraud professionals, who can unpick complex finances, navigate legal issues and use technology and psychology in their investigations.”

Donald Toon, Director of the NCA’s Economic Crime Command, said:

“We have identified fraud against both the public and private sectors as major national crime threats, requiring a strong, collaborative response from law enforcement, government and industry.  The Government Counter Fraud Awards are a valuable showcase of what can be achieved through public sector efforts to combat fraud in its many guises. We congratulate the award winners and all of those nominated, and hope their work encourages other organisations to strengthen their counter-fraud activity.”
