Essential Skills for Board Members
Building on CIPFA’s track record of providing introductory governance training over the last 15 years, CIPFA is pleased to announce dates for the 2012 public courses aimed at board members and senior executives. This course is based upon the ‘On Board’ Guide for Board Members of Public Bodies, written by CIPFA and published by the Department of Finance and Personnel (DFP).
Good governance is at the top of the agenda for public bodies. It is therefore vital that board or elected members equip themselves with the necessary skills. This course will provide delegates with the most up-to-date knowledge in corporate governance and the skills and direction to carry out their role effectively.
By the end of the course, delegates will have:
increased awareness of their governance roles and responsibilities and the standards of behaviour they are expected to exhibit
considered how to develop and maintain key relationships, for example between the chair and board members, the chair and the CEO and board members and the executive
an understanding of the board’s role in setting strategy and how to hold management to account for the performance against strategy through the scrutiny and challenge function
a greater insight into the principles of good decision making by a board and the board’s collective responsibility for its decisions
an understanding of the role of ‘board assurance’ as a tool for accountability
greater appreciation of how a board can evaluate its performance and requirements for individual board member appraisal
an insight into topical issues of the day
access to a wealth of CIPFA and other public sector best practice guidance.
Who should attend?
Elected members, chairs and non-executive directors (board members), chief executives and staff in sponsoring departments responsible for liaising with public bodies, whether they have undertaken training before or are new to their role.
