2009 Institute Conference - A Wonderland on the Regional Stand

This year the Regional stand was hosted by the North West & North Wales Society.  Volunteers from the Society staffed the stand and welcomed delegates from other regions as well as Conference delegates interested as to why there were so many people always at the stand!  Indeed, there was a steady steam of visitors on both of the days and plenty of opportunity to encourage new volunteers and to promote the activities of all Regions.  Some delegates offered their services as speakers for future events and some organisations were even interested in sponsoring regional events.

Each day the NWNW had designed a competition – Day 1 was to point out various landmarks on a map of the North West & North Wales.  Although many people managed to get various site such as Sir William Gladstone’s birthplace in Hawarden on the North Wales border, the site of St. Winifred’s Well foxed almost everyone.  I expect many people were going home that night to Google it’s whereabouts only to find it is in Holywell on the North Wales coast.

The successful winner was David Smith, Deputy Director of Finance at Wirral MBC

Day two competition was equally as trying as this was to identify where in region famous people were born.  Did you know for example that the Bee Gees were actually born in the Isle of Man? Neither did most people and as a result no one got all the questions correct.  CIPFA President Roger Latham was on hand though to draw the entries out of a hat.  Congratulations went to Julia Heap who took first prize on day 2 with Mo Amin coming a respectable second.

Not wanting to dampen their reputation of a very sociable region, the North West & North Wales laid on a host of regional refreshments that included, Eccles Cakes, Chorley Cakes, Blackpool Rock, Everton Mints and Kendal Mint Cake.  And in time honoured tradition provided Boddingtons and welsh Toffee Vodka to wash it all down with!

All in all, everyone who visited the stand claimed it was a huge success.  The buzz created by the delegates visiting the stand definitely contributed to a steady stream of visitors coming to find out more about the activities provided by the Regions.  It was also a great opportunity for colleagues past to catch up and for new acquaintances to be made.
