Forthcoming Events

Development School
| 30 & 31st October| Macdonald Inchyra Grange, Falkirk |

This year's event will explore the skills which individuals require in order to lead and manage, and is particularly relevant to those who may be moving into a management role for the first time or who would welcome a refresher.

The sessions will cover leadership and team roles, handling conflict, and assertive leadership and will conclude with a collaborative workshop. As such the event will provide a mixture of theory and practical learning, as well as the opportunity to put these skills into practice.

The Society subsidises attendance at this event, with the cost for students being £180 + VAT.   This includes full residential accommodation and dinner along with evening entertainment.

Scottish Students' Society Executive Committee Events Programme

The main role of the Scottish Students' Society Executive Committee is to organise a series of lectures and events for CIPFA students each year which aim to explore topical public sector issues, provide guidance on key aspects of the CIPFA qualification and introduce other skills which can support their ongoing success, both as students and finance managers.

During September the Society organised an event in Perth on the Initial Professional Development Scheme.  The event was attended by 54 students from a range of different organisations across the public sector.  We were very pleased that attendees came from different sectors and from all over Scotland and we strongly encourage students from outside the central belt and those working in any of the diverse branches of the public sector to get in touch with ideas about what is relevant to you.

We were also very pleased to see a number of distance learners at the event. We recognise that many CIPFA students are not supported by employers and struggle to find the time to attend events which support their development. Again, we would like to encourage distance learners who have suggestions about ways that we could provide additional support to get in touch.

The feedback from the event was very positive with a number of students commenting that they would be keen to attend future events.

The next event currently being organised by the Society is on Joint Working across the public sector and will be held in January 2009 in Glasgow.   Further details of this event will be available soon.

As well as encouraging students to attend the forthcoming development weekend mentioned above, we would also like to invite you along to the CIPFA Charity Challenge. This is a team quiz night and heats will take place in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen on the 6th November 2008. Why not join up with some colleagues or fellow CIPFA trainees and enter a team? At least you'll have an entertaining evening and, you never know, you might even win something.
