Buildings are literally the bedrock of an academy, the inspiring learning environment supporting students' studies, enabling them to achieve. However, buildings can prove one of the costliest and most demanding non-educational aspects of running an academy or a trust. Without proper management, maintenance and advice, or the local authority, many academies are left in the dark about how to best manage their property and what their statutory obligations are.
With the announcement from the Department for Education about the new Condition Improvement Fund allowing academies to apply for funds, from £8,000 to £4 million, to improve the condition of their buildings or to expand existing facilities and/or floor space an understanding of key areas such as project and programme management, cost management and the commissioning process will be essential for academies.
The first round of funding allocations are expected soon and successful academies will be over joyed but will need to embark on significant program and project management in order to successfully deliver their improvements – but question is where do they start? For those academies who are unsuccessful they will be facing a difficult time as they will need to examine what to do next and how best to support what may be a crumbling estate?
Whether successful or not, understanding your options going forward is key and the Hub, through articles, videos, tools, and guidance will provide you with everything you need to consider as well as the latest approaches and thinking to help you understand, maintain and manage your academy’s buildings in the most efficient and effective way. Our On-line forum will join academies up with others to explore new approaches and share best practice.
