The Audit Commission have released the results of their fraud survey of local government in England: Protecting the Public Purse 2013: Fighting Fraud against Local Government.
Detected fraud for 2012/13 was £178m but the experience of detecting fraud is described as 'patchy'. Some councils, particularly in London, have increased their detection of fraud. In other regions there has been a decline in the number of cases detected.
The survey separately analysed the level of fraud in schools for the first time.
