Finance Director

London: Salary £103,231

The vision for the borough is: One borough; One community; London’s growth opportunity.

Over the last two years, the council has undertaken an ambitious transformation programme to completely redesign the way it works to meet the needs of its residents, and over the course of 2017/18 it moved towards becoming a 'new kind of council'. This has meant creating new 'service delivery blocks', wholly owned companies and embedding new ways of working.

At the heart of this is a new relationship with our residents, building their resilience and enabling them to fulfil their potential by providing opportunities to prosper.
We are outcomes focused, directing attention and resources to the things that will have the most impact on improving the lives of residents.

Things are changing in Barking and Dagenham and our transformation has been recognised with us being recently voted LGC Council of the Year in recognition of our hard work.

We have recently created a new finance department and as such require a new Finance Director to provide strategic leadership and manage the senior team, including the Chief Accountant, Head of Assurance, Group Manager Service Finance and Head of Investment Management. Within the financial environment are our new trading companies, Be First, our regeneration company and Reside, our own PRS company. We also have an innovative Investment and Acquisition Strategy which will generate us significant income. As we still have significant savings to make, you will play a central role in driving through investment opportunities and efficiencies. In terms of your day-to-day responsibilities, the role is a mix of commercial and strategic advice and leadership.

You will be a proven Finance Leader with full CCAB qualifications. It would be beneficial for you to understand intimately how finance functions operate strategically in a local government setting. You will have credibility and an established reputation as a Strategic Leader with sound commercial acumen. You will have strong influencing skills and the ability to be robust in challenging situations.
