About this event

The CIPFA CFO Leadership Academy programme is about the leadership and personal impact aspects of operating at a senior level. Its purpose is to develop the personal skills of those who are in  or aspire to be in senior finance roles in the public sector. There are two strands:

  • One for serving chief finance officers (CFOs), which aims to improve your ability to work with and influence politicians, senior colleagues in your own, and partner organisations, as well as your peers and staff.
  • One for aspiring CFOs, which aims to prepare you for the personal leadership and influencing aspects of the top job.

The programme is made up of a mixture of informative and practical input from leading thinkers and practising CFOs, together with a core programme of action learning sets that will give you practical exposure to the latest thinking on leadership and personal impact.

On completing the programme you will:

  • have a better appreciation of your personal impact on others
  • have practical strategies for influencing senior colleagues and senior elected members
  • know how to exploit your own leadership strengths with those who work for you
  • be better able to analyse and learn from your own and your peers’ experiences when approaching complex issues and working with uncertainty
  • know how to construct your own reflective learning programme.

Who is the course aimed at?

Finance specialists from across the public services – including central government, local authorities, police and fire services, NDPBs and other similar bodies - who are aspiring to become CFOs or finance directors. It is also ideal for existing CFOs who are seeking to refresh their skills and knowledge.

Because you are already a highly experienced finance professional, the CIPFA Leadership Academy does not address the technical aspects of your role; it is about the leadership and personal impact aspects of operating at a senior level.
