CIPFA provides a number of e-learning courses for public sector professionals across a broad range of subjects.

E-learning courses from CIPFA 

We are continually developing a range of webinars, online tools and online training courses. These will enable you to develop your skills, knowledge and experience at a time that suits you and on a range of internet-enabled devices. 

The aim is to provide you with the flexibility to access the content in your office, while travelling or at home and whenever you wish 24 hours per day, seven days a week.

The benefits over conventional training courses are:

  • avoid travelling costs, time and environmental impact
  • greater flexibility with e-learning compared to conventional training courses
  • access anywhere in the world and at a time that suits you
  • take the time you need to work through the material and pick up where you left off.

Anti-bribery and corruption package

We have worked with the leading expert and academic, Professor Alan Doig, to develop a package of anti-bribery and corruption e-learning tools. The package includes an in-depth course exploring the UK Bribery Act 2010 and a short interactive slide set that can be shared with all staff.

Better Business Cases Foundation e-learning

CIPFA is an accredited trainer in ‘Better Business Cases’, a Treasury initiative to up-skill those involved in preparing or reviewing business cases. We have been delivering training on both an open and on-site basis since its initiation in 2013. We are now delighted that we can provide our best practice guidance and the Foundation exam through e-learning. Review the demonstration video on our CIPFA YouTube channel for an overview of the quality of the graphics, engaging material and interactive content.

Finance for the non-financial manager

This course will introduce you to the basics of financial accounting to assist you in understanding how to report financial information. Finance for non-finance managers e-learning will get you involved in the learning process and test your understanding of the key concepts with small exercises and simple examples. Good governance in the public sector

This e-learning course provides a starting point for reviewing and improving governance within your organisation. It examines the pre-requisites for effective governance based upon principles that can be applied to any public service organisation.

IPSAS overview

Practitioners working in the public services need to consider how International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) are reflected in their organisation’s financial reporting. This e-learning course provides an overview of the main differences between International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and IPSAS.

Practical understanding of asset management

Learn about the essential elements of property asset management with this 30-minute e-learning module. Get an understanding of property asset management in the public sector and the benefits that it can achieve including:

  • the three key documents required to develop an asset management framework
  • identifying key personnel within your organisation who need to be involved in asset management
  • developing an asset management approach using the eight key asset management characteristics.

This course is for anyone in the public sector who wants to learn about the essential elements of property asset management. It is also suitable for anyone who simply wants a refresher in this area. Developed by the CIPFA Property team this course is essential in an era of organisations needing to maintain – and leverage – the value of their assets.

You may also find our Certificate in Asset Valuation useful as an introduction to undertaking local authority asset valuations for financial statements. Covering rules and regulations of asset valuation, best approaches and more, this accredited qualification is appropriate for both local authority finance professionals and non-valuation property professionals.

VAT in local authorities

CIPFA has worked with our partners at Deloitte to create a unique suite of e-learning modules on VAT in local authorities. Using leading edge instructional design techniques, the modules are accessed directly from Deloitte’s online portal ‘on demand’.


We have worked with the leading whistleblowing charity, Public Concern at Work (PCaW) and audit, advisory, accounting and tax specialists Mazars to create an accessible, easy to navigate e-learning course on whistleblowing. It is designed for use in organisations, to show all staff how to raise and report concerns at work.
