The course covers the background to public sector funding and a practical consideration of public sector case studies to enable delegates to take an active role in financial management in their organisation.

About this event

We are committed to providing a qualification that not only arms delegates with a range of best practice knowledge and skills, but also enables them to actively apply the learning back in the workplace in whichever sector they are based.

To gain accreditation delegates are required to submit a portfolio of evidence and a work-based project that records evidence of learning and critical analysis for each module (other than module two); how the skills development has been translated to the working environment and the development of delegates’ ability to undertake specific tasks.

Completing the qualification offers a Post-Graduate Certificate (level seven) in finance business partnering, as well as the opportunity to apply for CIPFA Affiliate membership.

Modules offered through this qualification

Module 1: Finance Business Partnering

This workbook provides learners with an in-depth understanding of the context and concept of business partnering models in public sector environments.

Module 2: Commercial Acumen

This workbook provides learners with an understanding of the commercial acumen required in public sector organisations and in the provision of public services.

Module 3: Communication and Presentation Skills – Impact and Presence

This workbook provides learners with a detailed understanding of the importance of producing and reporting accurate and timely financial information for the efficient management of public sector organisations.

Module 4: Emotional Intelligence

This workbook builds on module three and provides learners with a detailed understanding of the behavioural skills and emotional intelligence needed by a finance business partner to manage the relationship with internal and external clients to ensure the needs of all parties are met.

Module 5: Influencing Skills

This workbook builds on modules three and four and provides learners with a detailed understanding of the nature of partnerships, alliances and flatter organisations. It will also explore why finance business partners need to develop and use their influencing skills at senior levels to improve their own and organisational effectiveness in a changing business environment.

Module 6: Transformational Change

This workbook provides learners with an understanding of how finance business partners can promote and influence large scale, complex transformational change programmes.

Dates and locations for modules:

Launch 29 March 2018, Edinburgh.

The first date on each programme will be a launch event over a lunchtime (12.15 to 13.45). This will provide delegates with the chance to get to know each other as well as some of the logistics and structure of the programme such as accessing the learning platform, pre-reading and work prior to face-to-face elements; the assessment process; and general administration.

Speaker - Brendan McCarron: Academy Facilitator and CIPFA Senior Associate

Brendan McCarron

Brendan is CIPFA’s Senior Leadership and Development Consultant, tasked with designing and delivering a number of major CIPFA programmes. He leads CIPFA’s Leadership Academy for Serving and Aspiring CFOs in the UK and for the Government of Canada. He is also heavily involved in CIPFA’s Finance Business Partnering work and in change management assignments in the UK and in Europe.

Speaker - Gill Barron Hatch Training

Gill Barron

Gill started her career at Deloitte where she qualified as a chartered accountant (ACA) in 2001. Gill continued to work at Deloitte in the Assurance and Advisory department until 2004, when she moved to PwC, to work in their consultancy branch.

Since 2006 Gill has spent a majority of her time developing and delivering training with the main aim of helping non finance people improve their understanding of finance and business related topics. Throughout her career Gill has worked extensively with both the public and private sector, providing training on, among other topics, the development and writing of business cases, and business writing generally.

More recently Gill has begun working closely with CIPFA, delivering training around finance-related topics.

Speaker - Sue Carruthers: Trainer

Sue Carruthers

Sue Carruthers is an experienced trainer and coach and a chartered accountant by qualification, with nearly 25 years’ experience in training and developing people in both line management and learning and development roles.

She now specialises in working with individuals and small/medium sized groups on interpersonal and management skills but in the past has delivered complex accounting and audit technical training through both large lectures and in more experiential, smaller groups. Sue’s experience crosses both the public and private sectors.

As well as using her in depth experience of working in different organisations and at different levels, Sue draws upon a wide range of ideas including Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), solutions focus, systems thinking, accelerated learning, multiple intelligences, acting techniques and developmental psychology. She is a Certified NLP Practitioner and is MBTI qualified.
