CIPFA announces a development strategy for hard times

A new Development Strategy has been published by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) aimed at strengthening the Institute’s increasingly positive profile as the leading body for public financial management and governance in the UK and around the world.

The Strategy, which outlines CIPFA’s objectives until 2015, is set against a background of the continuing aftershocks of the global financial crisis and the efforts of the new coalition Government to rebalance the public finances with unprecedented reductions in public spending.

The Strategy aims to maintain CIPFA’s portfolio of qualifications as the foundation for a career in public finance, and assure delivery of practical, high quality services locally. It will support individual CIPFA members and students and their employers working on the frontline of vital public services.

CIPFA’s vision will be realised by pursuing priorities summarised in four key strategic themes:

  • To give active support to CIPFA’s members and other public service leaders by providing information, insight, advice and training through challenging times
  • To champion and support improvement in standards of public financial management and governance
  • To lead the debate on public financial management and governance, continuously enhancing the authority and reputation of CIPFA and its members
  • To increase CIPFA’s impact and influence through a growing and diverse membership

CIPFA President Jaki Meekings Davis said:

‘Working to promote high standards and deliver excellence in financial management and governance throughout the public services remains at CIPFA’s heart. Following this development strategy, we aim to make our vision a reality.’

CIPFA, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy, is the professional body for people in public finance. Our 14,000 members work throughout the public services, in national audit agencies, in major accountancy firms, and in other bodies where public money needs to be effectively and efficiently managed. As the world’s only professional accountancy body to specialise in public services, CIPFA’s portfolio of qualifications are the foundation for a career in public finance. They include the benchmark professional qualification for public sector accountants as well as a postgraduate diploma for people already working in leadership positions. They are taught by our in-house CIPFA Education and Training Centre as well as other places of learning around the world. We also champion high performance in public services, translating our experience and insight into clear advice and practical services. They include information and guidance, courses and conferences, property and asset management solutions, consultancy and interim people for a range of public sector clients. Globally, CIPFA shows the way in public finance by standing up for sound public financial management and good governance. We work with donors, partner governments, accountancy bodies and the public sector around the world to advance public finance and support better public services.
