nominations open for the third annual award of excellence for comptrollership in the public sector

OTTAWA, November 8, 2010 – Nominations opened today for the third annual Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector that recognizes the success of federal public servants who have made significant contributions to financial management and/or comptrollership within the Government of Canada.

The annual awards program, presented by Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) and the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), includes awards for Innovation, Financial Leadership (CFO) and Lifetime Achievement.

“The awards highlight the essential role of innovation and how it is used to stimulate the growth of productivity in today’s society,” said Joy Thomas, President and CEO, CMA Canada. “The sharing of best practices is the key to igniting business innovation through creativity and thought leadership.”

Created to recognize excellence in public sector financial management, the awards also provide well-deserved recognition for the dedication and hard work of financial management professionals.

"All of the previous recipients and finalists of the Award of Excellence for Comptrollership in the Public Sector have been a source of real inspiration. They have shown how great leadership and great financial management can make a big difference to organizational performance. It's important that we draw strength from their achievements and strive to deliver high standards more widely," said Steve Freer, Chief Executive, CIPFA.

“The importance of recognizing excellence in everything we do not only applies to the awards, but is also one CMA Canada’s core values,” adds Ms. Thomas. “We are very pleased with the attention the awards have generated amongst public sector financial management professionals and look forward to another successful event.”

The awards presentation will take place during the awards dinner to be held in Ottawa in spring 2011. Recipients will be announced in CMA magazine and will receive a plaque and a $1,000 donation to a charity or scholarship fund of their choice.

All nominations must be received by Friday, February 18, 2011. The entries will be judged by a distinguished selection committee comprised of senior public servants and industry experts.
