CIPFA has welcomed the publication of the Government's response to the Department for Communities and Local Government consultation on the future of local public audit.
Ian Carruthers, Director of Policy and Technical at CIPFA, commented,
"The Government's response is helpful in providing a firmer outline of the proposed new arrangements for local public audit. However there remain areas for concern, and considerable further work is required to develop the detailed practical guidance necessary for individual bodies to implement the Government's proposals consistently and cost-effectively."
The Government will now begin a phase of intense discussion with audit bodies and councils on the shape of the new localised system. A draft Bill will be published for pre-legislative scrutiny in the Spring. Separate arrangements will be developed for smaller bodies like parish councils.
