While our local public sector might be operating in a political vacuum, life does go on. Demand for our public services is getting higher due to an ageing population and the costs of providing those services along current lines is also rising. The key challenges for public finance professionals can be summarised as improving performance, ensuring resilience and collaborating to deliver on better outcomes.
Northern Ireland has had its issues with governance failures. The question though is how the finance professional can support improved policy development and implementation through impartial and practical decision support, based on clear analysis of the data and financial implications.
We also know that the role of the finance professional needs to evolve. This is in response to improvements in technology affecting how we process routine work and improve support to operational colleagues to transform the way we deliver services. All of this will require change and we need to ensure that future finance professionals are fully equipped with the right skills to meet these new demands.
