Responding to COVID-19: insight, support and guidance

SAN Series 60: Getting Organised 'Structures, Governance and Performance for Asset Management’

CIPFA property identity image

Event summary

Over the past few years we have conducted numerous reviews in relation to aspects of asset management within public sector organisations. While various issues present themselves there are two in particular we see on a regular basis: inadequate resourcing in the asset management function itself, and/or ineffective corporate co-ordination and governance of asset management at a strategic level.

There are many reasons for both of these situations, but time and time again the potential for driving asset management forward is often lost before it has a chance to get going. Asset managers (where they are in place) as a result are often dragged down into day to day issues rather than planning ahead with the backing of the whole organisation.

So, is this your organisation? Have you got enough resources and, how effective are the corporate structures which underpin your asset management activity?

The aim of our events is to provide some practical baselines around these areas.

About this event

We will start by looking at where the asset management function should sit within an organisation, and from our benchmarking the levels of staff resources we are seeing around the UK.

We will then move on to look at structures and governance including examples of terms of reference for corporate groups.

Finally we will question the whole area of performance reporting to see how effective it really is and whether the key strategic messages are getting through, and more importantly, acted upon.

The morning will start with our essential strategic update, a must attend session which will explore what is happening in some of the key areas affecting strategic management of property assets, the public sector response to COVID-19, the economic climate, housing demand growth, commercialism, partnership working and political change.

Who should attend?

Anyone involved either directly or indirectly in strategic issues affecting local government and the wider public sector, and in particular the strategic management of property assets, that wishes to:

  • connect with key strategic initiatives and translate them into practical solutions for your property management
  • learn from good practice elsewhere and make evidence-based decisions, supporting organisational efficiency.

This might include strategic delivery managers, strategic property managers and asset managers, strategic finance managers, corporate policy and performance managers, and anyone involved in the strategic management of property assets.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the kind of governance structures and corporate groups that need to be in place for effective strategic asset management
