Council tax updates – Welsh Government consultation

On 11 June 2018, the Welsh Government produced a consultation document proposing for the removal of the sanction of imprisonment for non-payment of council tax.

The Government is of the view that getting into debt is not a crime and are consulting on proposals that will:

  • bring council tax debt into line with other forms of civil debt
  • remove an outdated and disproportionate response to civil debt issues
  • reduce costs and facilitate more citizen-focused approaches to council tax debt prevention.

The consultation period commenced on 11 June 2018 and ends on 3 September 2018.

Last year, the Welsh Government published Local Authorities’ Approaches to Council Tax Debt Recovery. This was part of the work to support local government reform and to help inform the delivery of the Welsh Government's commitment to make council tax fairer.
