Association Of Accounting Technicians (AAT)

Association Of Accounting Technicians (AAT)


Gaining the CIPFA chartered accountancy qualification after your AAT certification builds on your skills, improves your knowledge and makes you more marketable as an employee.

With CIPFA, you improve your earning potential and career prospects. The AAT will reduce your full membership subscription by over 50% during your CIPFA studies.

Of all UK accountancy bodies, CIPFA is the quickest route to becoming a chartered accountant. AAT members save up to £400 as CIPFA is the only UK accountancy body to give exemptions to AAT members at no cost.

Exams and exemptions

As a member of AAT you are entitled to full exemption from the following modules: Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Corporate Financial Reporting. If you have studied AAT's External Auditing module, you will also be exempt from the Audit and Assurance module.

Full MAATs are entitled to a reduction of 200 days from the 400 required in the Practical Experience Portfolio (PEP), leaving 200 days of experience to record.

MAATs are required to submit a portion of the PEP when applying for Affiliate Membership.

Exam-qualified finance professionals can join CIPFA, and gain CPFA (Chartered Public Finance Accountant) status, without having to sit any further exams. There is no cost to join and the 2016 membership fee will be waived. An exclusive HFMA discount will also be applied for the first three years thereafter, reducing the annual CIPFA membership fee by 50%, per year. This offer is available for a limited period only. Final date for applications - Friday 30 September 2016.

CIPFA offers a fast track route for qualified members of the IIA to become chartered public finance accountants.
Advance your public sector career in as little as six months and complete just three papers through the fast track route to achieve the CIPFA qualification. These are Public Sector Financial Reporting, Public Finance and Governance, Public Policy and Ethics.
Entrants via this fast track route do not need to complete workplace practical experience requirements.

  3. Any other membership grade of SAAA (Accountant, or Chartered Accountant) – take additional SAAA exams to become CPA and then avail of steps (1) or (2) from above.

Affiliate Membership Grade: (CIPFA (Affil))

  1. CPA member - All CPA members in good standing with SAAA.
  2. CA (Chartered Accountant): 5 years or more post qualification experience in Public Sector and in good standing with SAAA.
  3. Any other membership grade of SAAA (Accountant) – Study to SAAA CA or CPA level and convert via BL5 and then avail of steps (1) or (2) from above.

  • CIPFA (CPFA) annual membership fee – GBP £50 (plus any associated transactional charges that may apply) to be paid to SAAA in Serbian Dinar equivalent.
