About this event
Can a public body go bust? - Learning lessons in strong financial management
All public bodies have been facing financial pressures over the last 15 years or so which are becoming more acute given economic challenges as well as rising demand for public services. A growing number of councils in England have recently declared insufficient financial strength to meet expenditure commitments by issuing ‘Section 114’ notices.
Indicators are that more high profile councils will run out of money in the near future. How have Birmingham, Thurrock, Croydon, Woking etc councils got themselves into this situation, what are the lessons to be learned and how can this be avoided in the future?
These and other questions around risks and opportunities considered by public bodies will be addressed by Gareth Moss, recently retired Finance Director at CIPFA. In this session, Gareth will share his exposure to good practice finance strategy and operational financial management in public bodies across the UK.
