CIPFA comment: government announcement on social care funding

05-04-2023

In response to the government’s announcement on social care funding William Burns, CIPFA Social Care Policy Advisor, said:

“Yesterday’s announcement on the government’s plans for social care represent a step back from what the sector was promised 18 months ago.

“Halving the funding to support career progression and training at a time when there is a workforce crisis across the sector does not make sense and does not recognise social care with the status it deserves.

“Like other social care announcements in recent months, the government is kicking the can down the road rather than facing challenges head on. There is also a lack of transparency about how the rest of the £1.7 bn pledged last year will be spent.

“The government must stop falling short of the funding that social care needs to bring about much-needed reform to make services sustainable for the future.”
