CIPFA comment: government cap on energy bills

09-09-2022

In response to the announcement that energy bills will be capped at £2,500 annually until 2024 for households and for a period of six months for businesses, CIPFA Head of Policy and Technical Kirsty Stanners said:

“The Prime Minister’s announcement will provide some welcome breathing space for many households this winter and will allow public services to focus on those most in need.

"The support for businesses will be welcomed by local authorities, helping secure the local revenue base.

"However, this support is only a short-term solution, and longer-term policies such as reduced energy consumption, greater use of renewables and progress towards net zero are needed and must be combined with more targeted solutions."
