Eligibility for exemptions

Important information for institutions of higher learning

In response to COVID-19, we have temporarily suspended reviews into unassessed academic qualifications.

Student information

Check to see if your previous qualifications give you exemptions from CIPFA.

All exemption information listed is indicative, based on the modules usually studied as part of the degree in question. Some or all exemptions listed as part of a single honours degree may also be available under a joint honours degree (eg Accounting and Finance with Economics). How many exemptions are offered would depend on the relevant accounting modules covered.

All exemption applications must be accompanied by full transcripts. No exemptions are guaranteed until CIPFA have reviewed transcripts to ensure sufficient syllabus coverage.

Please email a copy of your certificate and transcript to studentsupport@cipfa.org to confirm your eligibility for exemptions.

An exemption will not be awarded if you have previously attempted an examination for a subject and have not been successful. Academic qualifications will not be considered if they were obtained more than 10 years ago. There is no time limit on professional qualifications achieved, provided membership of the awarding body is still current. By applying for and accepting an exemption you are accepting responsibility that you may be examined on exempt topics in subsequent stages of the Professional Qualification. We strongly recommend that you take time to review the Professional Qualification syllabus and learning materials for any approved exemptions.

If your qualification is not listed, it means it has not been previously assessed by CIPFA. Applying for exemptions involves mapping the relevant elements of your previous qualification against the CIPFA syllabus. Please ensure that you submit certificate of achievement, transcript and syllabus details to enable prompt review of your qualification.

All exemptions are subject to review and may be withdrawn at any time.
