Accounting hot topics: leasing and shared services accounting

03-10-2012

This October FAN series was the first in a new format of events, designed to provide authorities with a technical update on two distinct hot topics, to network with colleagues to inform good practice, and highlight actions to be taken to prepare for the challenges ahead.

The October series of full-day workshops focused on leasing, and the emerging shared services agenda, encompassing:

  • A practical walk-through of the current accounting requirements for leases and lease-type arrangements under the Code of Practice An early heads-up on the development of a new leasing accounting standard and the possible implications for local authorities
  • An overview of the emerging shared services agenda, useful reference material for authorities, and some of the emerging challenges for local authority finance staff
  • A look ahead to the future changes in accounting for Joint Arrangements and where this is likely to impact on local authority accounts
  • A discussion on any areas of CIPFA Guidance that may need further clarification to help practitioners apply the principles to their local joint arrangements
  • Group networking with colleagues to discuss the key challenges and possible solutions in these two topic areas, sharing any good practice or practical solutions that others may wish to adopt.
